Chelmer Wine Time Pavilion

This outdoor pavilion is all about connection. Connection to childhood memories, connecting with guests, and connecting indoor and outdoor spaces.

Before this pavilion was built, the existing outdoor area wasn’t used, because it was unsheltered and disconnected from the house. Now it’s a space to gather around the fireplace, built with materials that are both sentimental and harmonious with the rest of the home.

Despite the proximity of nearby houses overlooking the yard, this outdoor space feels private because it deliberately blocks out close neighbours while also framing a beautiful view of a maple tree and pond. Hit-and-miss bricks were used to maintain this privacy while still letting in soft northern light (and the bricks also offer a nod to the client’s childhood home).

Throughout, finishes like a bench seat extending into the garden make the space feel larger and connect it with the rest of the home.

This space now draws our clients outside, and has become their preferred dining spot (even though they have three other dining areas inside!).
